Beschreibungen

The cultural influence that the Babylonians had on those who came after them took two different paths. The path of texts, when stories themselves are transmitted, and the path of literary traditions, when it is not possible to transmit specific texts, but rather the transmission of literary norms and practices, and class forms that have their own characteristics in the use and interpretation of language. With the spread of texts east and west, and the localization of texts and traditions in new cultures, it was necessary to take into account a process that takes place slowly and secretly, which is the process of adapting texts and traditions with the aim of localizing and adapting them. Thus, new layers belonging to other cultures accumulate on top of authentic texts and traditions. Texts and traditions do not remain constant, but rather change slowly and imperceptibly, in order to suit the literary and cultural environments to which they are transmitted. But after long periods of time, when these texts and traditions return to the environment from which they originated, their external features have changed, making it appear as if they have lost their affiliation, at least in form, to the historical image with which they began. This is exactly what happened when some texts and traditions returned to Arabic literature and represented texts belonging to the last cultures that adopted them. In fact, Arab culture itself adapted and modified them as well. The book follows the forms of adaptation of Babylonian myths when they reach neighboring literatures, especially when they end in Arabic literature, as well as the types of literary genres and their topics; Such as slaying the dragon, the death of the hero and his resurrection, the legend of the hero's birth, the formation of heroic tales, and proverbs. It follows the myths in their ways of transmission from the Babylonian heritage to Arabic literature directly, or through the mediated paths through which they passed.
